Road construction: What is it?
Earth movement also includes transforming the earth's material into a new desired shape and physical condition. It is commonly known as Earthwork excavation. Earthwork should not be confused with soil only; the engineering processes involving unformed rocks are also termed as earthwork.
In general earthwork can be classified into four broad categories:
Initial clearance of vegetation and trees and stripping of top soil.
Excavation to form trenches or pits, known as confined excavations.
Cuttings, known as open excavations.
Construction of embankments and filled areas.
What are the steps of earthworks?
Typically, bulk earthworks will include the following steps
setout
clearing vegetation
removing topsoil
removing and replacing any unsuitable material
cuttings and embankment construction
any spoil or borrow activities
any additional processing of selected material for the selected material zone.
Responsibilities
Ensure that all the required parts for assembly are present.
Mark cutting lines on material.
Confirm that all parts are properly fitted, aligned, and screwed in.
Ensure that quality control standards are met.
Maintain a production schedule.
Test products for their functionality.
The goal of earthwork planning is to minimize the project cost and duration by determining soil allocation, equipment configuration, and haul route. Due to the absence of programs or guidelines for earthwork planning, planners rely heavily on their experiences for planning.
